Outer Space

To start this project I started with a blank background and filled it black, then I added some noise to make it look like it had stars. After that I created another layer and filled it with black and gave it a clouds filter, then created another layer with a gradient with blue, red and yellow effects. I then made a layer under the clouds layer and used a brush to create what looks like a nebula. Somehow the blue and red together made a pink color that I think looks really cool.

To create the planets I got a picture that I took for an art class and made it a pattern. I then found a spot on that picture (the part of the lamp that the fumes would come out) and then moved it to the bottom right corner. Then I changed it to have an orange color and spherized it to make it look round. Then created another layer and copied the thumbnail of the planet, and changed the Inner Shadow and Inner and Outer Glow. After this I changed the layer blending mode to screen. I then used the Emboss feature to roughen up the planets surface and set the layer to overlay. I created another layer by copying this texture and gave it a Gaussian Blur and transformed it to give the planet a shadow.

I then created another planet with the same steps as the first but I used a different spot in the picture (the edge of the lamp that had reflected light shining off of it). This is the picture I used for the planets

I then made another layer filled it black and gave it a cloud filter. Then gave it a twirl and used an eraser to make it look like a dust ring. I then compressed the image to make it look like it would go around the planet. I also added some noise to it so it would look like rocks. I then moved it over to the planet I wanted to have it on and erased the bottom of the ring so it looked like it was going around the planet. Then I was done and I was happy.

Self Portrait

To start this project off I cropped the picture so I would not have so much wall in the background. I then proceeded to work on the eyes using the pen tool and eyedropper tool to make the shapes and color them. I continued to us the same method of using the pen and eyedropper tools on each other part of my face going from the eyes to eyebrows, then the nose.

I got tired of seeing such pasty white skin so I decided to work on the shirt next. After I was done with the shirt I worked on the neck and the rest of the face that I hadn’t done. After i finished the face layer I took on the hair. It took me a while to find out how I wanted to do the hair I tried many different ways of trying to make it look good, but I found that it looked best if I used shapes that were similar to the ones on the rest of the portrait. Then added straighter lines to emphasize the darker and lighter parts of the hair.

Finally I used the gradient tool to create the background of the picture. I chose to use blue and black and have the center of the gradient and the top left corner. The background added a very much needed change to the overall feeling of the photo ie. making it look a bit happier. I also tried having the background black and a dark gray but it made the picture kind of scary or sad and I didn’t like the way that looked. Overall I am happy with how it all turned out and am super happy that it remotely looks somewhat like me.

Nike Ad Review

This ad by Nike shows very good understanding of typography. In the words at the top there is no lines that come off of the letters, also known as serifs. The text on the bottom does have these lines and makes the ad look much more professional. The first group of text has a sans serif font while the second text has an oldstyle font, these two fonts together contrast very well since one has serifs and one does not.
